Urban evolution in land snails

Land snails are characterized by low mobility. This means that they tend to show strong local adaptation. We study urban evolution in land snails along urban-to-rural transects, with a focus on evolution of shell coloration in response to the urban heat island. We also investigate how population fragmentation in these hermaphrodites changes mating opportunities, and how this may lead to evolution of reproductive organs. Where possible, we engage the general public in these research projects.
